More on Yoga...
Yoga is an ancient healing art. It is designed, if practiced on a regular basis, to improve physical health as well as "tame" the mind. This does not mean control the mind or get rid of thoughts because we need our thinking brain...for things like finding our car keys, for example. But why use just our brain moment to moment, when every cell, tissue and muscle has its own intelligence, its own "mind". Yoga is an invitation to open to the intelligence and wisdom of the body.
Yoga is not a religion. Yoga grew out of Hinduism, an ancient way of life, a culture. Since Hinduism is a culture, there are many religious sects within it depending on the region. Some sects were actually monotheistic, believing in only one God. The Hindu culture includes many aspects of Life, such as theology, aryuvedic medicine, aryuvedic diet, yoga, meditation, daily moral ethics and much more. Yoga stemmed not from their religious views, but from their way of life--To create and sustain a healthy body, mind and spirit.
There are eight limbs of Yoga that focus on 1&2) moral ethics 3) physical poses 4) breathing 5) internal awareness of the senses 6) concentration 7) meditation 8) stillness or centered-ness of mind.
Sanskrit is one of the oldest languages in the world. The Sanskrit words for the 8 limbs of yoga are yamas, niyamas, asanas, pranayama, pratyahara, dharana, dhyana, and samadhi.
Namaste (pronounced 'nah-mu-stay') is an ancient Sanskrit word used as a greeting or salutation. It is a deep reverence and is often said at the end of a yoga class, meaning "I honor You," or "the light in me honors the light in you."
